DON MONICAL

Our shipmate, Don Monical, relinquished the watch and went on Eternal Patrol 26 September 2009 after a courageous and painful battle with cancer. The announcement was made before the Annual BBQ commenced by his friend and our Base Commander, Paul Wright. Don qualified on the USS BONEFISH (SS-582) in 1967. No obituary was available on Don at the time of the newsletter writing. Don will always be remembered as a great shipmate with a real gusto for life. He will be missed but not forgotten.

Goleta CA: Donald Wayne Monical passed away peacefully on Sept. 24, 2009. He was born Aug. 3, 1947, in Aiea, Hawaii, to Russell and Marietta Monical. Don was a Veteran of the United States Navy Submarine Service, having served in the Vietnam War. He qualified on the USS Bonefish (SS-582) in 1967 and was a SK2(SS) when he left the Navy. After 37 years, he also retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He is survived by his daughter, Julie Monical and grandson, Nico Velasquez of Long Beach; his son and daughter-in-law, Justin and Tami Monical and their two daughters, Mikaela and Mickenzi of Joshua Tree; his former wife Scoti Soard of Lancaster; and longtime companion, Sandy Evans of Carpinteria. Don was known as the "Candyman" of Nordoff High School (Ojai) football games during the 1990's. In retirement, Don gained immeasurable pleasure traveling, spending time with his dog Koa at the Island Brewing Company and greeting visitors to Carpinteria as a City Host volunteer. As a Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce Ambassador, he was honored as the 2007 Volunteer of the Year.
